What can music therapy do for you?

Music therapy is a blend of art and science where music is used to achieve non-musical goals…so what does mean for you?

If you’ve ever used music to calm yourself during a stressful commute, or motivate yourself to jog a little faster, or unleash the tears when you’re feeling down so you can start to feel better…then you have gotten a glimpse of how music therapy works. When you or your child works with a music therapist you are working with someone trained in using evidence based approaches to harness those therapeutic benefits of music.

For a child, that may mean working towards goals of improving emotional regulation, social skills, communication or self-expression. Music therapy has become an essential support for many kids living with Autism, ADHD or other developmental, emotional, or behavioral challenges.

There are many reasons why music is especially well suited for neurodiverse kids. For starters, music is enjoyable for most kids (not all!), nuff said. But in addition to the joy and playfulness of a music experience, there is power in the organizing effect that music has on a child who may be feeling disorganized or overwhelmed. The predictable patterns of a rhythm and melody can be calming for a child with sensory processing differences. For children who struggle with communication, music offers a way to self-express and communicate non-verbally.

Music activates more neurons in the brain than almost any other stimuli. Music therapists are trained in using that wonderful aspect of our design to help others reach their goals. There is a lot that music therapy can do, but it may not be the right fit for everyone. If you’re unsure if it is right for you or your child, we encourage you to set up a call and find out more.
